When the opener is the problem
If the motor hums but the door doesn’t move, the plastic drive gear inside most chain-drive openers has usually stripped. If nothing happens at all and the wall button is dead too, it is often the logic board, especially after a summer storm. In both cases the door itself is usually fine, and that is what keeps this repair small.
Repair or replace
We carry gears, boards, and sensors for the LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and Craftsman openers common in Utah County homes, and most repairs run $135 to $290. If the opener is more than fifteen years old, or the repair costs half as much as a new unit, we will say so.
New openers
A belt-drive opener with battery backup and phone control starts at $545 installed. It runs quietly enough for a garage under a bedroom and keeps working through a power outage.
